Careers
When people join the Shropshire Homes' team, they come for a career and not just a job. When they start, they have an induction to the team and their role. There are several mandatory but informative courses they attend. If appropriate we will support and pay for the individual to do an NVQ up to level 6.
Training is essential to ensure our people are up to speed and safety aware in a fast-moving industry. Nearly every other week we have people attending courses ranging from CDM, Scaffolding inspection to the Safety Management and Supervisory coursers. We ensure people have the appropriate professional qualifications for their job role and we currently have people studying courses such as Quantity Surveying and Construction Management. When the opportunity arises, we encourage people to apply for more senior positions where they can develop their leadership skills managing and inspiring teams.
Apprenticeships
As a company we are committed to training the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
Apprentices are paid to attend college one day a week as they complete their apprenticeship qualifications. They spend four days on site with their dedicated mentor learning the skills to make them competent in their particular discipline. Generally, people are recruited after they have completed a year at college so that they have a track record and some experience of their craft. For those with the desire and ambition we have had apprentices progress to be site managers.
Although we have now fulfilled our apprentice vacancies for this year, we look forward to recruiting again in Spring 2024.
Our people
Not only are our people experts and talented at what they do, they are people with big hearts. At least once a quarter we have employee-led fund-raising events to raise monies for a local charity, as well as seasonal events and activities in-and-out of the office.
We believe a good work/life balance is essential for a healthy career and mind. With the increased consciousness of mental health and wellbeing, we have now trained over 40 members of staff in Mental Health Awareness level 2.
