The Heritage Buildings at Crystal Mead originated as a workhouse which was established in the early nineteenth century.

The facilities were much altered and extended over the years and by the mid twentieth century it had become one of the principal hospitals in the area.

When the hospital closed the site was designated for housing on the understanding that the most important of the original buildings would be retained and converted for residential use.
