From rubble to radiance, Stafford’s most iconic landmark stands with elegance once again.

Leading independent and award-winning housebuilder, Shropshire Homes, has a well-earned reputation for transforming former hospitals into luxury homes.

One such development is St George’s Mansions in Stafford, which was the former St George’s Hospital. Built in the 18th century, this incredible landmark has suffered from decades of neglect, experiencing two fires in the recent years which removed most of the roof. Rooms and corridors were un-recognisable, floors were knee deep in rubble and clutter, and the former chapel and refectory were destroyed.

Today the imposing building stands with grace and elegance having been carefully converted into immaculate contemporary apartments, already accommodating many happy residents with only a limited number left to be sold before reaching completion later this year.

Ranging from one to three-bedroom apartments, as well as penthouses towering over the bustling town of Stafford, St George’s Mansions has something to suit everyone. Many feature large open-plan interiors whilst others have a more traditional arrangement of a separate lounges, dining rooms and kitchens. There are apartments at St Georges ideally suited to first time buyers, younger couples and downsizers looking for a stress free lifestyle without losing the space and style of a larger property.

In addition to the conversion of the old hospital, Shropshire Homes has also constructed two further buildings within the grounds of the development, ‘Tower Place’ and ‘Potter’s Court’.  These apartments have stylish contemporary interiors with large windows reflecting those of St George’s Mansion.

The restoration of a historic building is a major undertaking and requires significant investment, time, resources and a highly skilled workforce. As a result, many developers shy away from such projects. Luckily, Shropshire Homes isn’t like most developers and has a different philosophy.

Managing Director, Howard Thorne, explains: “These magnificent old buildings deserve some TLC invested back into them. The original architecture is captivating and we enjoy the challenge and are motivated by the outcomes we can achieve – characterful, luxurious homes with attractive period features.

“We work with the best of the original features and combine innovation and vision with craftsmanship to transform the old and unloved into something new and desirable.

“It’s been a privilege to deliver this project and give Stafford a truly wonderful building that will stand with dignity for many years to come.”

Shared ownership is available on selected plots enabling a wider range of purchasers to make their new home at St George’s Mansions.
