Shropshire Homes’ Health & Safety Assistant Kev has recently passed his NEBOSH exam in Health and Safety Management for Construction with flying colours!
Kev’s journey in construction began thanks to his grandad, who inspired him to begin an apprenticeship in bench joinery and carpentry at the age of 16, the week after he took his final exam at school.
Kev moved to Shropshire Homes in 2000 as a finisher on our Belgravia Court development in Shrewsbury, and later stepped into a managerial role as finishing foreman. He continued to rise through the ranks over the years, becoming an Assistant Site Manager and eventually a Finishing Site Manager, taking over sites towards the end to make sure they were completed to a high standard.
In 2022, Kev decided to make the move to the Health & Safety department as he’s always wanted to know as much as possible, from building regulations to legislation, and felt there would be more to learn with a career change.
And he’s already learnt a lot! Kev told us, “I have been on various courses for my new career, all leading to a globally recognised NEBOSH qualification, and now I have it, I feel more confident within the Health & Safety department.”
We asked Kev about the support he has received from Shropshire Homes over his career, and he was quick to reply “I have been supported at every step which has assisted in my career path - you aren’t a number here, you are an individual with unique skills and potential that they recognise, they will always bring out the best in you.”
With an impressive 23 cumulative years with the company, we asked Kev what he enjoys most about working at Shropshire Homes, and he said “everyone is approachable and friendly, from the office team to the managers on site and the tradesmen and sub-contractors. It’s not work when you enjoy what you do.”
Kev is looking forward to what the future holds for him, saying “there is still a wealth of knowledge I can learn from Jim, our Health & Safety Manager, and as mentors go you don’t get any better.”
