Having recently completed his Construction Site Supervisor Level 4 course and his Higher National Certificate in Construction, 21-year-old Harry Talbot has become Shropshire Homes’ current youngest Assistant Site Manager, working under Site Manager Ed Beedles at Derrington Meadows, Ditton Priors.
Harry’s recent promotion to Assistant Site Manager follows 3 years of studying and shadowing on numerous Shropshire Homes construction sites. Harry admits that although his A-levels in Business, Philosophy and Ethics are not a typical career path into construction, he has always been interested in how things are built and how construction projects come together.
His career within construction began in 2022 when he spotted a Trainee Site Manager role advertised with Shropshire Homes, and he hit the ground running from there. Spending one day a week studying at Shrewsbury College and the remainder shadowing on site, Harry was slowly given more responsibility as his confidence and skills increased. Harry highlighted the chance of working across our sites with different Site Managers as really improving his capabilities within his role; “shadowing allowed me to take on different views of common problems and how they work around them, this enabled me to implement these ideas when they arose again.”
When asked about the role Shropshire Homes has played in his 3 years of studying Harry replied, ‘‘the opportunity to learn has been exceptional, this is through the chance you get given to learn off all departments, including the Site Managers, Quality Managers and Health and Safety Managers which I believe has propelled my knowledge and understanding, everyone is more than happy to put their time in to help you progress which I really appreciated.’’
We asked Harry what sets Shropshire Homes apart from other developers, and he was quick to respond, “at Shropshire Homes they follow through with what they set out to deliver, that being to create beautiful new homes that have quality and character, they stand by the work they produce and make sure not to disappear if any issues arise after handover, these are dealt with promptly to ensure that customers remain happy and expectations are met.’’
So what’s next for Harry? With aspirations of becoming a Site Manager by 25, Harry is determined to succeed in this industry. His next steps are to continue developing his knowledge by enrolling onto a Higher National Diploma in Construction and eventually advancing up to a Construction Management Degree.
