This month, Apprentice’s Evan Wright and Jake Edwards received the Barry & Peggy High Scholarship for their exceptional dedication in their apprentice roles at Shropshire Homes. The Barry & Peggy High Scholarship Award aims to recognise young people who go above and beyond in their apprenticeship role and reward them with £1,500 to go toward their tools and further study.
Having both started their apprenticeships in 2021, Ian Lawson, Training Manager at Shropshire Homes nominated Evan and Jake after recognising their progress, fantastic feedback from their mentors and site managers and excellent attendance throughout the first year of their apprenticeships.
On speaking to Ian Lawson, he said “It was the apprentices progress and achievement at work that gave me the belief that they were worthy of a scholarship. I therefore felt inspired and confident to fill out an application form for each of them. It was great to receive the e-mails to say they had both won a scholarship.
“I am delighted that Jake and Evan have been recognised for their excellent progress as apprentices at Shropshire Homes. This has been achieved through their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm. Plus, the support of their mentors and the supportive environment created by their site managers.”
After receiving the news of their amazing achievement, we discussed the exciting news with Jake and Evan.
Evan Wright
Evan who is completing a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Bricklaying at Shropshire Homes’ Ledwyche Rise development through Shrewsbury College was excited and happy to receive the scholarship news, “It means a lot to have accomplished something based on my work and I am proud to know my hard work has paid off – It has inspired me to work ever harder!”
He added “I couldn’t believe it, it felt like I had won the lottery. I would like to thank my Site Manager, Phil Allsobrook for being an amazing and fair boss – he has done so much for me and I couldn’t be more thankful. I would also like to like to thank my mentor, Steve Griffin, because without his guidance I wouldn’t be in this position right now. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor – he is fair and understanding.”
On asking Evan how he finds working at Shropshire Homes, he said “I couldn’t be in a better place. I feel like I fit in and it is opening up a lot of opportunities for my future. I am lucky to work for a company like Shropshire homes.”
Evan’s future career plans include continuing to focus on his apprenticeship and upcoming exams, aiming to be a very skilled bricklayer with a brilliant reputation, which we have no doubt he will achieve! When discussing Evan’s success with Phil, Site Manager of Ledwyche Rise, he was so thrilled for Evan and couldn’t reiterate enough how well-deserved the scholarship is.
Jake Edwards
Jake, who is based at Shropshire Homes’ Crudgington Fields development, is completing a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry and Joinery through Shrewsbury College. Jake is thrilled that his hard work has been recognised, commenting on the scholarship “It is great and allows me to expand day-to-day tasks as I can now buy more tools.”
He added “I’m enjoying working at Shropshire Homes and feel like I have progressed in the last year”.
Jake gave special thanks to Senior Site Manager, Danny Farmer, his mentor, Piers Onions and Training Manager, Ian Lawson for all of their support. Jake plans to continue progressing at Shropshire Homes, so watch this space!
