Tom Groves, Quantity Surveyor at Shropshire Homes, recently achieved a First Class in BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying from the University of Wolverhampton. To celebrate Tom’s incredible accomplishment, we discussed his past, present and future career plans.
Having started his degree and new career as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor in the commercial department at Shropshire Homes in October 2017, Tom has progressed significantly in this time. Since then, he has received two promotions as Assistant Quantity Surveyor in December 2021 and, more recently, Quantity Surveyor. He has even bought his very own home from Shropshire Homes – what an achievement at 24 years old!
Prior to working at Shropshire Homes, Tom worked as a Construction Apprentice for a building contractor where he obtained a Level 3 in Business Admin. There is a clear pattern showing that Tom is always looking to develop his education and himself professionally.
So, what is a Quantity Surveyor? A Quantity Surveyor is a construction industry professional with expert knowledge into building costs and contracts, measuring whether a project is profitable and will set budgets for developments. On asking Tom why he decided to move into Quantity Surveying, he said “I’ve always been interested in construction, but didn’t want to always be on-site. Quantity Surveying offered me a balance, with a mixture of site and office. I like that you see a project through from start to finish”.
When asking Tom how he found studying and working, he said “I was lucky that Shropshire Homes funded my degree and supported me so that I could attend university one day a week. I was also offered a lot of help from my colleague, Nathan, who had studied the same course at Wolverhampton previously”. Tom’s dissertation was relevant to Shropshire Homes and based on assessing the benefits of BIM (Building Information Modelling) for SME developers.

It is clear to us that Tom will continue to go far, setting himself high aspirations with future plans of further qualifications and career progression.
