Last month, Tom Holmes, Trainee Services and Agreements Coordinator, graduated in HNC Construction & the Built Environment with a Merit. To celebrate his fantastic achievement, let’s hear all about his past, current and future career plans…
In August 2021, Shropshire Homes welcomed a fresh face to their team, Tom Holmes. Little did we know that Tom's unique journey would make him an invaluable asset to the company. Starting his journey at Shropshire Homes as a Trainee Services and Agreements Coordinator, his role involves coordinating services and agreements related to construction projects, a task that requires precision, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the construction and built environment.
Tom's academic journey began with a less conventional approach. He wasn't particularly drawn to traditional school education, which led him to explore various paths before finding his desired career. On leaving school, he initially pursued agriculture at Walford, but a year later, he realised that his passion for rugby was not being fulfilled. Tom then embarked on a diploma in Sport Studies at Telford College, followed by a Level 3 PE Teaching apprenticeship at Shrewsbury College.
Following college, Tom was working at JD Sports for a year when he stumbled upon an opportunity at Shropshire Homes through LinkedIn. Intrigued by the potential career path, he felt an instant connection and knew he wanted to seize this opportunity. From that moment, he never looked back!
What sets Shropshire Homes apart for Tom is the dynamic nature of the work – the variety of tasks and challenges keeps him engaged and constantly learning. Tom particularly acknowledges the influence of Pam Weston, his mentor, manager, and boss, for providing exceptional guidance and support throughout his journey. He also values the camaraderie he shares with his colleagues, who collectively create a motivating and supportive work environment.
Working at Shropshire Homes has not only enhanced Tom's professional skills but also his personal growth. The experience has made him more resilient under pressure, shaping him into a well-rounded individual. The unique aspect of his academic journey was the integration of work and study. Tom attended college one day a week for two years, an arrangement supported and funded by Shropshire Homes. This approach allowed him to apply theoretical knowledge directly to his job, gaining a comprehensive understanding of various roles within the construction industry.
So, what’s next for Tom? Tom's aspirations are set on pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil and Transportation Engineering. This six-year endeavour, including one day of on-campus learning at the University of Wolverhampton each week, will equip him with the technical expertise required for intricate construction projects, such as sewer systems, roundabouts, and drainage.
Tom's journey doesn't stop there. His dedication to the construction industry is evident in his long-term career goals. He aims to deepen his understanding of the technical aspects of construction at Shropshire Homes, with an ultimate goal of becoming a Technical Director.
While Tom's journey is uniquely his own, he is the first to acknowledge the people who have played pivotal roles in his success. Special thanks go to Pam, whose mentorship and guidance have been invaluable. Tom is also grateful for the support and encouragement he has received from Rob Perrins, Technical Director at Shropshire Homes and Danielle, his partner, both of whom pushed him to strive for excellence in his career.
Tom Holmes' journey from an uncertain path to a promising career in the construction industry is a testament to his determination, adaptability, and passion for growth. Shropshire Homes has not only provided him with a platform to excel but has also gained an exceptional talent committed to driving innovation and excellence in the world of construction.
A huge congratulations to Tom – you are a true asset to Shropshire Homes!
